Remember when David Guetta titled his album ‘Nothing But The Beat’? It made seemingly no sense… Last time I checked, Chris Brown’s and Nicki Minaj’s vocals did not constitute ‘nothing but the beat’. Guetta has done incredible things for this genre of music, and I’ll always respect him for that, but perhaps the album title was not the right fit. I’m going to take this opportunity to showcase a few gems that I believe hold true to that nothing but the beat mentality. When heard at the right volume in the proper setting, these tracks will catapult you to another dimension. You feel the bass deep in your chest, you lock into a rhythm, and you just groove. For hours. Nothing about these songs will be congruent with your typical, progressive house shtick, but hopefully you can appreciate the importance of tracks like this. Legends like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Danny Tenaglia, and the entire island of Ibiza were born out of the nothing but the beat mentality. None of this blossoming scene would have existed without that. Enjoy these deep, dark grooves.
