Tiesto’s Club Life Volume Two: Miami Edition [Beatport Release] + Track Reviews

Last year, Tiesto released the first Club Life compilation, the Las Vegas Edition. Since then, he has started a clothing line, a headphone line, and has broadcast a mini-series on YouTube reliving his travels in 2011. Tiesto is on fire, and it looks like there’s nothing that’s going to cool him down. And let’s be honest, when the world’s greatest DJ releases a compilation, you listen to it. The track selection is absolutely massive, including tons of material that he has been playing during live sets. Below is a track list, and a breakdown of a couple of tunes you simply have to add to your iTunes.

Chasing Summers (Original Mix) – Tiesto – A perfect set opener, this track carries the aura and appeal of summer. When it’s in full swing, nothing can go wrong. A surprisingly dark and heavy bassline provide a nice, healthy contrast to the whimsical intro, and the overall production is a dazzling triumph that once again shows off Tiesto’s amazing ability as a producer.

What Can We Do (A Deeper Love) (Third Party Remix) – Tiesto - I wasn’t a huge fan of the original, feeling as though it was very plain and altogether unimpressive. However, Third Party has given it some added spark by infusing it with a staunch bassline and synths that scream trance to my ears.

Arena (Original Mix) – Avesta – Sometimes you need a solid non-vocal jam to really ignite the crowd. An anthem if you will. The aptly named “Arena” is the perfect type of song for that kind of environment, and sounds very much like a Hardwell production when it drops.

Walls (Original Mix) – Sultan & Ned Shepard ft. Quilla - Beautiful vocals and a very uplifting melody make this track a downright crowd-pleaser. Look for this one to blow up now that this compilation has been released.

Make Some Noise (ft. Ben McInerney) – Tiesto & Swanky Tunes - Besides Tiesto & Hardwell’s remix of “Young Blood”, this is definitely EHusky’s pick for best new track on Club Life Volume Two. Swanky Tunes’ influence bleeds through in a magnificently powerful fashion, and you can bet that Tiesto came in and hammered it home with his tuneful expertise.

Man, does this guy live the life or what? Hectic, yes. Insane, yes. Tiring, yes. But unbelievably fun? Definitely. Every crowd shown in this video is absolutely loving the vibes this Swede brings to the table. And what’s not to love? His music is all about feeling good and creating a positive atmosphere. My only question: Who brings a watermelon to a show to have it signed? Was that supposed to invite some comparison between Avicii’s head and a watermelon? We may never know…

Hip Hop Meets Dance Music, People Come Together

There’s no question that the boundaries between music genres are blending more and more with the passing of every month. But there seems to be some animosity at times between those who enjoy one genre, and those who are fanatics of another. We’ve all been exposed to those individuals who say “House Music is gay,” or something along those lines. Beyond the obvious lack of ability to understand the meaning of the word “gay” on the part of those individuals, they are to be regarded as nothing more than ignorant. And since when can a musical genre carry a sexual preference? Every different form of music appeals to somebody somewhere, and 99.9% of the time it’s geared toward someone’s happiness. Furthermore, those who dismiss dance music before giving it a chance need to open their eyes; nothing is more popular right now. To top it all off, EDM is collaborative in nature. Artists sample and include songs that fall into the categories of classic rock, soul, metal, punk and even classical music, giving fans a smorgasbord of options to satisfy varying musical tastes. But right here, right now, I’d like to focus on the Hip-Hop influence.

There’s no denying that many lifelong hip-hop fans have converted to EDM, but it is also quite clear that many rap enthusiasts not only dismiss house music as a whole, but they continue to denounce it based on claims that there are no lyrics in many of the songs. So, what’s my point? EDM and hip-hop can co-exist despite any claims to the contrary. The most prominent display of this that I’ve seen came from a performance by Laidback Luke in Cancun. Accurately reading the diverse tastes inhabited by the minds of the Spring Break crowd, Luke dropped Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg’s “The Next Episode” midway through his set, much to everyone’s surprise and pleasure. He then proceeded to play a bootleg combining “N***as In Paris” with “Rattle” by the Bingo Players. Bootlegs and mashups combining these two genres are truly a form of art, and deserve ample recognition for their ability to provide a fresh and appealing outlook on the compatibility of two musical forms that seem, at times, diabolically opposed. The following tracks are a testament to this unlikely, yet very possible, symbiotic relationship.

The name “Molly” has gotten an unfathomable amount of attention ever since Madonna made her juvenile and irresponsible comment at Ultra. At the end of the day, however, one cannot deny that many people attending shows have chosen to partake in the ingestion of the aforementioned substance. Some artists have played into the trend, while others have chosen to state their opposition to it. Cedric Gervais’ track “Molly” has been in the forefront of this phenomenon the last week or so for obvious reasons. But today EHusky is focusing on none of them. Instead, this post will focus on the official video. Playing into the new rave culture headlined by mainstream DJs and producers, this is one of the most erotic and sexually-driven videos available to the general public ever produced. Watch it and there’s no way you’re going to be able to focus on anything else but your desire to be placed in the setting depicted. As much as some people want to fight the sex, drugs, rock n roll aspect of electronic music because they see it as something that could ultimately lead to its downfall, there is no denying that’s become a part of the experience. At this point, I am very torn on the issue; Kids will be kids, but those who have loved the genre for years recognize its true capacity in promoting an escape that can be shared by many absent the presence of illicit substances. So long as the true goals and ideals behind dance music are recognized and promoted, and so long as those who are responsible for its growth do not advocate dangerous substances, there doesn’t seem to be too imminent of a threat posed to the integrity of the genre. But I digress, and you have a mouth wateringly sexy video to watch, so I’ll shut up.

Cancun Revisited: How EDM Stole Spring Break 2012 + Essential Jams

“I love how big house music has gotten… It means a lot to me…” These are the words uttered by one of my best friends in the midst of a drunken, shirtless crowd on the beach at Oasis Cancun. And for me, I must say that truer words have never been spoken. There’s just something about waking up in a tropical resort to the pounding basslines of “Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker” from the beach a quarter mile away. Talk about instant hangover remedy… But jokes aside, Spring Break 2012 was an eye-opener for both long-time house music enthusiasts such as myself, and also for those who know nothing about it. I have no doubt that hundreds of kids went home with their ears ringing and also with a new hunger to explore the now wide world of electronic music. Since the dawn of the MTV days, music has and always will be an integral part of any Spring Break experience, but after witnessing it first hand, the smooth and rhythmic melodies that dance music has to offer was incredibly infectious during Spring Break season 2012.

First and foremost, Puerto Vallarta bore witness to the largest Spring Break music festival ever, Electro Beach. The festival housed names like Tiesto, Avicii and Fedde Le Grand. We’re talking A-Listers, folks. For a long period of time, I regretted not booking a trip to see that, until I caught wind of the talent that would be gracing us with their presence in the sultry clubs located in downtown Cancun:

  • Night 1: Dayglow with the Manufactured Superstars
  • Night 2: Chuckie
  • Night 4: Avicii
  • Night 5: Laidback Luke
  • Night 6: Wolfgang Gartner

I must admit that the Manufactured Superstars set is nothing but a blur in my mind, and thus I cannot write a solid review about it. Here’s EHusky’s take on Dayglow: The countdown is fun, the initial paint splatter is fun. However, you probably won’t see a goddamned thing for the rest of the night and the inside of your ears will be fluorescent shades of pink and green for about a week. The bottom line: It almost doesn’t matter who’s DJing if you’re too close to the front because it is complete and utter chaos and you most likely will have no idea what’s going on. Who knows, maybe I was just too drunk. Cut me some slack, I didn’t go to Cancun for the food… Also, note that Dayglow appeals to a wider audience than most shows because, “OMG, it’s a paint party!!! Yay!!!” This means you are likely to hear a more mainstream and played-out set. Now hear this: I love the MF Superstars, and I would go see them headline a show any day. My main point is that if you really want to see an artist perform, don’t do it at Dayglow; The paint serves primarily as a distraction and ultimately takes away from the musical aspect.

I will be doing individual reviews of the shows I saw that week (except Avicii because it was such a poorly planned event that I did not stay for his set). In the meantime, though, I’d like to hit y’all with a few songs that were played day in and day out during my stay in Cancun. If you were there, you’ll want to listen to these as they may bring back some good memories, or at least help to fill the void left behind by your week-long blackout.

1.) Camorra (Original Mix) – Nicky Romero - Let me start by saying that I am very proud of myself; If you listened to the mix I uploaded the day before leaving for Spring Break, this was the second song. If only my psychic abilities pertained to more useful things… Anyway, this song features a minimalist drop and a tropical vibe that is very foreign to Nicky’s usual style; An all-time favorite for me.

2.) Epic (Original Mix) – Sandro Silva & Quintino - I can’t tell you how many people I identified this song for down there. It’s just one of those tracks you can’t help but dance to…

3.) Pacha On Acid (Original Mix) – Afrojack - Dirty Dutch at it’s finest, plain and simple. If the Netherlands were tropically located, it would be a crazy place…

4.) Is This Love (Chuckie Remix) – Luis Lopez vs. Jesse Lee - Is this love, or is it just Spring Break?

5.) Dominicana (Goin’ Nowhere Vocal Mash) – David Mayne - Unfortunately, I did not hear this song played once, as it is not widely known. However, it has always reminded me of clear blue water, white sand, and lush palm trees. If I DJed those beach parties every day, you can rest assured that this would have been played.

Avicii At UMF 2012: Everything You’d Expect & Then Some [Live Set Video Incl.]

If you didn’t believe that dance music has permeated the mainstream pop music industry, Avicii and Madonna have just proved you wrong. Everyone knows EDM is massive around the world these days, but I can’t say how many of us would have ever envisioned Madonna introducing Avicii at Ultra as a DJ that “saved her life”. Clever wordplay and drug references aside, this queen of pop’s endorsement of Avicii and dance music in general has further solidified the undeniable grip electronic music now has on the minds and ears of music lovers worldwide. Opening up with an unidentified remix of Madonna’s “Girl Gone Wild”, 22 year old Tim Bergling delivered a set that undoubtedly left exhausted dancers with revitalized muscles and unmatched energy. Goosebumps and tears of joy surely followed for some. Chock full of “ID” tracks and classic Avicii originals and bootlegs, the Swede certainly lived up to all the hype that surrounds his name these days. But hey, we expect nothing less. If you were lucky enough to be there, and even if you just watched the live stream, there is no question that it was an unforgettable performance. Tiesto Goes To College For In The Booth: Episode 9

Seeing this video brought back fond memories, as I was able to attend Tiesto’s College Invasion Tour when it hit URI. There really is no question; Tiesto’s sets are unreal. But I’d like to focus on the behind-the-scenes aspect of this video, in which you see Tiesto interacting with your run-of-the-mill college students. He goes on to admit that he is more or less overwhelmed with the vast support he received on these campuses, flying from sold out show to sold out show. He points out, also, that even though most of the songs he plays are rarely on the radio (except satellite), the entire crowd seemed to be able to sing along. For Tiesto, the relationship between the Internet and college students is a very special one in that it has allowed such massive exposure and support of the EDM genre as a whole throughout the United States. Just a side note: This may be the first episode of “In The Booth” where no one gets hit with a champagne cork. Instead, they leave the class behind and Tiesto sinks the game-winning shot on the beer pong table… Such a bro.

Sebastian Ingrosso’s Refune Radio: Episode II

Now one of my all-time favorite radio shows/podcasts, Ingrosso’s Refune Radio delivers some of the best music the EDM genre has to offer. I like to think of it as the continuation of Swedish House Mafia’s BBC Radio 1 Takeover. What’s even better, Ingrosso invited his prodigy, Alesso, to be a part of episode 2, a treat for us all. Throughout the hour-long show, the two of them talk to each other, and Alesso tells the story of how he got involved with Ingrosso in the first place, which is really quite interesting. Anyway, on to the music… Every. Single. Track…. Is a jam. Within the mix lies not one weak track, but of course EHusky expects nothing less from one third of Swedish House Mafia. Other notable tunes featured in this mix include Alesso’s “Years”, as well as two huge mashups, one by Alesso, and one by Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso. In the interest of pleasant surprises, I encourage you to listen to the hour-long show to find out what they are. Amidst all of the talking, the music on the show is downright phenomenal, and Seb has again proved his ability to show the world what’s really good (not that he had to). I’d like to close this review by highlighting a rare track featured on Refune Radio II: Etienne De Crecy & Alex Gopher’s “Overnet”, which dates all the way back to 2004. Ingrosso describes it as a “style changer” that’s “funky, sexy and has a big peak”. The most interesting part about this track is that it is strikingly similar to many recent releases. A jam ahead of it’s time, and one that has still not gotten old… check it out:
